Artist Statement

As a photographer I enjoy exploring all aspects of the medium. Specifically, within my work light plays a large role. By using light in a very intentional way I aim for the photographs to elicit emotions, feelings of hope, emptiness, nostalgia, and curiosity.

As an openly queer woman, my work often focuses on gender and sexuality. This includes exploring the gender stereotypes and expectations that women face from within and outside of the lgbtq+ community. With regards to queer culture, my work specifically highlights issues that queer women face within the community. Many people have fabricated ideas of what the lives of queer women look like based on stereotypes that are not true portrayals. I often hear people saying things like, “you don’t even look gay!”, which is demoralizing and draining because it presupposes that being gay is ‘other’. Love between queer people comes in all different genders, races, shapes, and sizes and my work aims to emphasize that queer people and relationships don’t have a specific “look”. Additionally, I want to provide a source of representation for queer people that doesn’t come from a lens of struggle or pain, which is so often portrayed. I want to create a space where we can simply exist.
